Andreas Haftas, the last veteran of the Greek war of 1821, did not realise his meat ambition to live until 1901, in order that lie might say he had seen three centuries. He was born in 1779, and was, therefore, 116 years old. One of the streets in Athens is named after this aged man, and when his death occurred recently a vast number of people attended the funeral, which was a public one.
