Things That Singers Should Know
The following' hints to singers are taken from a small text-book on “ The Natural Use of the Voice,” newly published by Messrs. Robert Cocks and Co., London : Carefully cultivate the art of listening, in order that you may derive the most benefit from that which you hear. In singing, as in the sister arts, quality is more desirable than quantity. The vocal apparatus requires attention, but no indulgence. For example, many artists have learned from experience that it is not wise to muffle up the throat when leaving a house or concert hall after singing. Very few students or singers know that sore throat and subsequent loss of voice are often caused by inspiring through the mouth instead of through the nose, especially in rooms where the atmosphere is overheated and vitiated. When the days of your preparatory study are past, and you are about to appear as an artist, bear in mind that it takes a very long time to hve down an unfavourable or bad in ? p ‘ therefore do not undertake woik to which you feel that you cannot do comparatue jU Study not only your particular part in a work, but the work as a whole, in order that you may enter into, and accurately impersonate, the chaiact. which you represent. 114 .. If a voice is in a healthy condition, it requires no stimulating. If ft 1S ln an unhealthy condition, consult join doctor at once.
