BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting was held on Monday. Present—His Worship the Mayor (R Ward, Esq) and Crs Petchell, Pankhurst, Durbridge and Robinson.

The Post Office and Police Departments wrote stating that the matter of asphalting in front of the police camp and post office was nnder consideration.

A letter from S. Learmont, onquir mg why his tender for a contract, the lowest, was not accepted, was received.

The offer of H S Beer to erect a new beacon and paint the old one for £3 was accepted. Or Durbridge, for the Works Committee, reported that during the month the sm face men had been work iog at the South Riverton cutting assisting at asphalting, gravelling and doing up the cemetery. The new shed and repairs to old one wore satisfactory jobs. The contractor for the borough carting was not giving satisfaction, and something required to be done in the matter—Regarding the carting, it was decided to write to the contractor.

It was decided to notify all property owners whose trees were overhanging the footpaths, that they would have to be cut away.

As part of R Blackmore’s property was in the county and part in the borough, it was agreed to allow him to register his cattle dogs at the same rate as that charged by the county. Cr Durb'idge said he had inspected the metal at the shaft at South Riverton, and ho thought it was excellent material for road purposes. There were between 80 and 90 yards of it. It was decided to offer the owners £3 for it.

Only one tender was received for the lease of the pilot reserve, that of Mrs Jenks, but as it was not in at the advertised time, Or Durbridge considered they could not receive it. After a short discussion, seeing it was the only one, the council agreed to its being opened. Mrs Jenks offered £6 per annum for the house and seven acres. The tender was declined, and it was decided to re-advenise.

The chairman reported he had conferred with the county chairman with regard to the Council Chambers, but no agreement had been arrived at, and as the borough council had adhered to their part of the lease, it was decided to take no further steps in the matter.

It was pointed out that ratepayers were under the impression that they had been paying 3d more in rates for several years past to provide for asphalting, The Mayor said the extra 3d had been put on to pay interest on the wharf, and a councillor pointed out that tho erroneous impression had got abroad through Mr Akhurst moving that the 3d be set aside for asphalting, a different thing to levying it for that purpose. The C. A. Board wrote granting an increase of 2s per week in the allowance of an old couple residing in Riverton.

After passing £6(518s 7d, borough accounts, and £2 domain accounts, the Council adjourned.
