London. News baa been received that Benin was captured on the 18th iust. after a running fight through the bush for 24 miles. Four whites were hilled, including Dr Pyfc, and 16 wounded, Captain Byrne was severely wounded. . The King and priests fled. Deep holes filled with corpses were discovered. These were human sacrifices to what is kn iwn as the Juju rites. Ghastly sights were witnessed by the expedition. The bouses in Benin were reeking Avith human blood. A few earners who accompanied J. R. Phillip.-, the deputy-commiss-ioner, were tonml alive m a well amongst the dead offered as sacrifices. The Maxim guns played great havoc at Benin. The fighting lasted eight hours.
