An International Mines Congress sitting in Paris has approved of a scheme for limiting the output of coal by working four days instead of for five days’ weekly. The Sultan’s reply to the demand for reforms in Armenia has not satisfied the Ambassadors at Constantinople and the British, Russian and French representatives have held a consultation, the outcome of which is jaot yet published. The position of affairs is regarded in the Turkish capital as critical. Sir P Currie declined to permit any alteration in the principles of reform or the mode of their execution and the other embassies supported the British Ambassador. It is understood that the three Powers mentioned have already agi eed to take action to enforce their demands.

INTERCOLONIAL. Sydney. Reports are in circulation that Mr Eddy has been offered £IO,OOO by Victoria to set that colony’s railways in order with a two years’ engagement. Replying to a question on the subject in the House of Assembly the Chief Secretary said he knew nothing of Mr Eddy’s arrangements, but that there seemed little possibility of the House agreeing to raise Mr Eddy’s salary. Personally he might vote for an increase of £IOOO per annum if Mr Eddy was made sole Commissioner, but the Government as a whole was not likely to accept this. The activity in the silver market continues and there has been another advance. A number of doctors have been examined by the Dean Commission with a view to establishing the theory that Mrs Dean’s illness was not caused by poison but was an attack of peripheral neuritis following on influenza. Several deposed that this affection not uncommonly supervened upon influenza and the symptoms of it were very difficult to distinguish from those of arsenical poisoning. A meeting of members of Parliament and other federationists, called by Sir H. Parkes, affirmed the necessity for immediately pressing forward federation. A fedral party was formed and a strong committee appointed to attain the object. Sir H. Parkes vigorously denounced the Government’s policy as being opposed to federation.

Melbourne. Under the new tariff the duty on imported horses will be abolished.

The Government have instructed Mr Wilson, dairy expert, to visit New Zealand at the end of the month to inquire into the manufacture of cheese on the Canadian principle, with a view of imparting instruction to the worker's in local industries.

The Presbytery of North Melbourne has approved of the acceptance by the Pev. Mr Hewitsonof the call to Knox Church, Dunedin.

An application has been granted in Chambers for calling a meeting of the creditors of the Colonial Bank of Australasia to consider a modification of the scheme adopted two years ago involving a reduction of the rate of interest on deferred fixed deposits to i 2i- per cent.; also for an extension of the time for repayment. The application stated that owing to the

general fall in the values of property and produce it was impossible to maintain the 3 per cent, rate of interest.
