Orepuki Saleyards Co. —A meeting of the provisional directors of the Orspuki Sale Yards Company was hell in Wilsons Hotel. Orepuki, on the 3rd inst, when Mr J H Young was appointed chairman, and Mr J P Young, Secretary. The secretary was authorised to take the necessary steps to have the Company floated at once, which he has lost no time in doing, as the prospectus appears in this issue. From the well-known stook carrying capacity of the Orepuki district and phenomenal increase in the number of cattle changing hands of late, this company ought to have a prosperous career before it.

Waiau Survey District. —Maps have been issued by the Lands Department of 393 odd sores of surveyed, second-class land to be sold cn Wednesday 19lh situated in the Waiau Survey District on the east side of the Wairaki River some miles north-west of the Eastern Bush township. h Westers Stock Centre. —At the last meeting of the promoters of the Orepuki Saleyards Company the secretary (Mr J. P. Young) was instructed to make application to the Land Board for a land grant of one acre between corner of Denbigh si reet, Hirstfield, to the road leading to the Waiau, and the railway reserve, that being the locality whore it is intended to erect the proposed aalovards. If this grant is obtained it is intended to request the Government to shift the railway cattle yards to the same site in order that the convenience «.f both parties might be facilitated. As an indication of what may be expected in the future when the cattle raising industry has become fully developed, we may state that 200 head of mixed cattle passed through the existing yards last sale day. Riverton School Prize Fund. —Circulars are being sent out to parents of chiliren attending school and others inviting subscrip tiona for the purpose of presenting prizes for distribution at the breaking up of the school. The reason why the committee are sending them out is because previously many parents residing outside the town were not called on tu contribute. In justice therefore the present course has been adopted, and we trust the circulars will be responded to in such a way as to render a personal canvass unnecessary. Contributions may be sent either to the head teacher or to the secretary, Mr J. Owens, not later than 13th inst. Pahia. —A very severe shook of earthquake was felt here on Tuesday morning about 6.40. It was proceeded by a sound of sighing or rushing wind, at which even the fowls were much disturbed. The shock travelled apparently f ont north-west to south-east, and was at first slight, only a very light tremor being felt, increasing however, till every article in the house rattled and jingled, and many faces paled. I have only experienced one more violent. Rain still falls in heavy showers, but with pleasant gleams of aunshino between, and vegetation grows apace, especially weeds. — Own dorrespondent. Political Address.— Mr Pinkerton, member for the Dunedin City, addressed a largely attended meeting of his constituents on Wednesday evening He defended the policy of the Government so far as he had v >ted for and supported it, and maintained that the borrowing was entirely differentia the principal and effects from the previous borrowing for public works, with the exception of the borrowing for the construction of muchneeded roads. This would not entail any burden on tl e taxpayers and would be beneficial t) settlers and the colony generally.
