SOUTHLAND H. AND C.A. BOARD.

The annual meeting of the Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held on Wednesday in the Old Men’s Home. There were present— Messrs Hall (chairman), Hast, Roche, Heller (Arrowtown), Blacke, McCallum Ellis, Fraser, and Perkins (secretary). The Chairman proposed to leave discussion upon the financial statement until March next, the end of the financial year He might, however, state that, while the receipts and expenditure were about even, the balance-sheet showed a deficiency of £391 10s Id. This had been brought about by the fact that the bank had forced them, on account of overdraft, to pay in advance to the Southland Hospital the sum of £lB5. This had been unavoidable, and had therefore run them into an apparent deficit.—Mr Hast thought that the paymaster who paid in advance was a bad one.—The Chairman said that as a matter of fact the Board ought to pay the hospital the amount of allotment every month, in which case there would have been no need for overdraft, but the payment in advance had been a necessity. At this point Mr Fraser (who, as well as the Kev. Mr Ferguson) was a retiring member, said a few words upon the fact of his retirement, and hoped that the new members would get along as cordially with the Board as he himself had done in the past. Mr Heller proposed, and Mr Hast seconded, a motion, which was unanimously carried, that Mr Hail b© again asked to act as chairman for the ensuing year. Carried. The chairman moved that the next day of meeting be fixed for the Thurs. day before the second Friday in the month, stating that this day had been previously selected as it saved the ratepayers the expense of a second railway journey. Carried.
