PARLIAMENT.
Fmday’, 3rd July
At the evening sitting of the House of Representatives, Mr Palmer expressed a wish that the motion re tiie Evening Press should be withdrawn. He thanked the members on both sides of the House for their sympathy. The nvjUun "'as then withdrawn, and a motion expressing regret that such a. libellous and untruthful article should have, been published, was agreed to. Mr Mills (Port Chalmers) said he would not support Mr Fish’s amendment, but probably might support the Government’s proposals if they were remodelled.
Mr Hutchison (Waitotara) said that be had found that the proposed taxation would entirely fail to touch a large class of people who were specially able to pay. Under the new proposals the property tax was not abolished, but perpetuated with ad •litional evils. He could not look with favour on an income tax. No relief was offered to those who were now suffering from indirect taxation. Mr Rolleston severely criticised the administration of the Rand Depart meat, and also spoke in justification of
Judge Edwards’ appointment. Messrs O’Connor, Blake and Buckland also spoke.
