ACCLIMATISATION OF SALMON.

- Professor Hu'lon suys that New Zealanders can congratulate themselves on having successfully acclimatised the salmon lo at least one Southern river, for the fi-sii recently caught in the Aparima ;hkl sent up to Christchurch for examination are salmon. The two specimens caught measured about twelve inches in length, and were too small to produce ova, the smallest known containing ova being fifteeu inches in length. Professor Hutton strongly advises that now the Apariina has been proved suitable for saimon, and that salmon have been successfully acclimatised there, steps should be taken to encourage the increase of this noble fish. Instead of putting small quantities of ova into rarious streams, the ova sliouldj bj concentrated in that river that had proved most suitable for its development. If salmon lar<*o enough to produce ova were obtained in the A naritna, that river would soon bo able to supply the other rivers of New Zealand, The -enerditv of people are not aware that the two small sulmou under notice are the first that have been caught in the Southern Hemisphere.—Press.
