OREPUKI.
(ritOM OUR OWN CORttESVONDENT )
Orcpuki, in common with the surrounding district, is enjoying a slight foretaste of the coming winter. As far as mining is concerned the weather is all that one could wish, but unfortunately our few farmers have been caught in the middle of their harvest, and will no doubt suffer some loss. The polling to-day, as far as Orcpuki is concerned, was decidedly against borrowing money to construct the Colac-Biverton road. Glad to see that work on the Round Hill Sludge Channel is about to commence in earnest. If successfully carried out, there need bo no fear for the future prosperity of Riverton, which only wants the harbor opened up to enable the city of the far south to hold its own against its larger and more favoured neighbours. The Railway Department have this year, as they did last year, laid on excursions trains to Orcpuki, but it seems never to enter their heads to give the Orcpuhitcs an excursion from Orcpuki, which would bo very acceptable. However, wo are thankful for small mercies, and intend to take advantage of cheap fares to go and gee the Riverton Races. The Orcpuki Goal Company will soon be in full work again, they bavin,.- got their pumping gear in workin” qrder, when they will bo putting out a very superior coal to any that has yet been mined there. March 2Gth.
