was the counter of objects made by the boys and girls in the school of Japan. Among the excellent embroidery and cabinet-making and poittry, there were cariously enough :i number of models in folded paper, made by young JipaneEe —" just to amuse then.selves." Ar.d the ingenuity shown in the combination oi Bbape »nd colour in these trifles completely put into tLe shade all attempts at folding un to then familiar to UP.
There was this frog, for instance, done in a dirty green'uh-bronze paper (and looking much more froglike than we have been able to get it in the sketch), which we persut-ied the attendant to take to pieces for ua and then do up again to Bhow us how it was done.
A square piece of paper was taken and folded across (a 3 in diagram, Fig. 1.) from a to a, and a to a, both inwards;
and then from b to Is, and bto b, both outwards. And this was squeezed up, as shown in Fig. 2. ■ Then another folding gave ua Fig. 3, in which we have a set of eight little hands around the axis oa. The paper at b was
then folded back so as to get all round the effeots shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Then by folding the points S and 5 toward the oentral axis, we get tha state of affiirs in Fig. 6, which by a little folding outwards can be made to appear, as in Fig. 7, and finally, as in our shaded illustration of the completed artiole.
