A meeting of the Otautau Town Board was held on ; Wednesday evening, 2nd July. Members present: Messrs Gardiner (chairman), Quin and Gilchrist; The action of the Works Committee in letting contract on road leading past .Juk.es’, was endorsed by the Board, as was also that of the Chairman, re railwxv.approaches.' Mr Gilchrist, who-bad been appointed by the Board to examine the street lamps, stated that there was nothing wrong with them —the fault lying with the lamplighter. It was decided to call for fresh tenders for lamplighting. The Clerk was instructed to write to owners of gorse hedge" trimmed by the Board, and if not replied to, to take out summonses without delay Mr Gilchrist moved tint the sum of £3 3s be voted to the Athenaeum. The other members, however, thought that they were not at present in a position to do so. The motion was therefore lost. A number of small accounts were passed for payment. The half-yearly installation of officers of the Wallace Lodge, I. O. O F., A. C., took place in the new Oddfellows’ Hall, Elizabeth street, on Wednesday evening. There was a good muster of me'qbers, but on account of several of the Grand Lodge officers having tiken part in a similar ceremony in the Aparima Lodge at Otautau on the previous evening, the only visiting brother who was able lo he present was D.D.G.M. Heywood. I.P.G. Bro. Bateman, acting as G.W., assisted Bro Heywood to ins f all as officers for current term the following members Bro. Ireland, N.G.; Bro. Galloway, Y.G.; Bro. Booth, P.S. (re-elected); Bro. Bateman, U S.; Bro. Tersdale, Treasurer. Appointed officers :—Bro. Cunningham, R.S.N.G.; Bro. Stevnso L.S.N.G.; Bro. M'Kenzie, R.S.S. ; Bro. Black, LAS. ; Bro. Gilmour, RAV.G.; Bro Wilkinson, L.S.Y.G.; Bro.Boivm, LG. ; office of O.G. not yet filled. The balancesheet for pint six months was read and adopted. The accounts showed the lodge to be in a flourishing condition, the amonnt of assets over liabilities being £132; while its roll had increased by 23 new members havmg been initiated. On closing the lodge, brethren adjourned to the Globe Hotel, where Bro. PuUison had an excellent spread awahing them. Including a few visitors, ab.ut twenty sat down lo a supper, the preparation of which having been under the personal superintendence of Mis Patlison, was of i course one by which her fame in previous j efforts in that line in no way suffered. The . chairs were occupied by the newly installed j presiding officers, and on the tables being cleared, and the Queen’s health having been drank, with musical honors, toasts peculiar to the order were proposed aud responded to.

Grand Lodge ifficers present ; Bros. Medley and Watson. N.G., Bro. Jloclgkinson ; V.G., Bro. Hannah ; Secretary, Bro. Ford (re-elected) ; Treasurer, Bro. Wyllie. A few admonitory remarks from Bro. Medley, and a vote of thanks to the visiting and retiring officers brought the meeting to a close. In cur report of the assault. case Bulman v.Livingstono heard at the R.M. The “Glorious Twelfth of July ” was celebrated last evening by the members of the Sons of David Loyal Orange Lodge. The drillshed was neatly and appropriately decorated for the occasion, flowers, evergreens, flags, &c., having been profusely pressed into service for that purpose. Mr Irwin, the Secretary of the Lodge, - and several other members certainly deserve credit forthislabor of love. About 8 o’clock some 150 people, amongst whom were .-a large number of members,of the; order conspicuous by their particolored sashes, sat down to tea provided by Mr B. Boivih, land- -4ftor- lull justice bad been done to the practical portion of the entertainment, the tablesnvere clearedand the forms re-arranged. Bro. McKelvie took the chair and delivered a short address on the principles and objects of the Orange institution, about which he said there was much misconception in' ihe minds of a large section of 'the community. Shortly put, their objects were freedom of religious opinion and worship to all, and loyalty to the Queen and Constitution so long as they were •Protestant. He was followed by Bro. Gibson, chaplain of Sons of Levi Lodge, Invercargill, who delivered a telling address in defence of the order, and Jts aims. Songs were given by Bros. Wilkinson and Humphreys and Miss Duncan. The .ball, w.is then, cleared for dancing, and shortly afterwards a-numerous and, gay .crowd of “ lads and lasses ” tripped it right merrily to the inspiriting strains of the Messrs Blacks’ quadrille band. Mr J.. : Forsyth ac'ed efficiently as M.C. Dancing was continued until,an early hour this morning, with slight intervals for song and refreshment. Altogether the gathering was a most" successful and pleasant one. Members of tho local Masonic Lodge will be pleased to learn that their late brother, ; the Rev Mr Grime, has" proved an exception to the adage “ Out of sight out. of mind.” Anxious to give a proof 'of his love and kindly feeling towards his mother lodge, be selected in Melbourne, while en route to the oil country, as a gift thereto, a colored photograph of His Royal Highness Albert Prince 'of Wales, Most Wosrliipful Grac'd Master cf the Ancient Fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons and Patron of the Order in Ireland and Scotland. Thes übject of the photograph is represented in (he full r-, galia of his office. As a work of art, the picture is simply perfect, and ns the photograph is issued under authorised auspices, it. may bo accepted as a faithful representation of the original. The picture measures 30 x 24 inches, and is handsomely, framed. It will prove an acceptable and appropriate addition to the addornment of the lodge room, and also serve to keep green the memory of a beloved and respected brother.
