("Original.) What gars ye greet my mither, dear ? What mak's ye look sae wae ? The spring has come, the gowans smile The bunnies on the brae, S'ae blithly frisk, the bonnie pets, You'd think that they were fey ; They mak' roe laugh wi' very glee Till I'm as dafil as they. Ahl bairn, dinna ask me why I caima smile as ye. Ye ken ne* whot my heart can feel. Sometimes I think I'll dee. An orphan ye muy be, my bairn, Y'er faither's at the war ; My bluid rins cauld to think that he May dee, end me sae far. Sae wipe y'er eeri, ray bonnie bairn ; I meant na you should share The sorrows my puir heart maun feel Till its pulses beat nae mair. An' God proteot ye", bonnie lass, An* help me, too, to bear The sorrow maist the puir man's lot, The puir man His b est care.
