INVERCARGILL.

(FBOM OUB OWN COBBEBPOXDBST.) The Scottish entertainment on behalf of the hospital proved a wonderful success. There were about 1600 person* present in Sloan|» Theatre, and about £l3O was taken. This was aU the more remarkable, as, with the exception of the Garrison Band, there wera no performers jf any note, who took part in the affair. The object of the entertainment, however, was the attraction, and a little patriotism was also introduced as a s'imulus, the entertainment being entirely Scotch. is tome talk of an Irish entertainment being given shortly, on behalf of the same iuvaluable institution, as that I have mentioned, and it is even said that an English one will come after that. The English amateurs here are the strongest in point of talent, most of our best local musicians being Ssulhrons. The larrikins haTO been at it again, and some more young scoundrels have been pulled up at the Police Court for stealing fowls and ducks. The case was clearly proved against t hem, in.i< o 1 two of them pleaded guilty, and all but one of them wore very proporly sen-

tenced to a good sound beating with the birch rod, and two day's imprisonment. Themagistrate was unable to sentence the other boy, who was named Thomas Robinson, to a flogging also, though he was apparently the worst of the IoV, as it appears the Act does not allow boys of over sixteen years of age to be whipped with a biivh rod. This is a grand mistake. Thero is a double reason for making the flesh fvel when the moral and intellectual sensoriutn has become brutalized by practices in crime. ... ...,_.,,„ In the contest for the Rifle Club's trophy last Saturday, Mr .Robert Buchanan won, with 54 points. The shooting generally was good. Great indig.iation is expressed here at thealteration of times fixed upon by the Minister of Railways for the trains'f>r Kingston, and also those for Clinton. The times are ex» ceedingly inconvenient, and have been ■ ob« vi.iuslv alterel to suit the convenience of the passengers by the Waimea Plains railway, a private speculation, in which it is said Mr Oliver lias a pecuniary interest. It is clearly a Dimedin dodge. The matter h«s been tak«*n up warmly by the Chamber of Commerce, and also by the public generally. On Mmday evening next an indignation meeting is to be held in order to express the sentiments of our citizens. People of all shade* of politics are at one with regard to the transaction being a scandalous affair. Mr Turn bull, notwithstanding his connection with the Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Ageucy Company, spoke out strongly and plainly at the Jhamber of Commerce meeting on tbesubject. The Messrs Feldwick have on theother hand also taken an active part in th» ag'tation, and although they are interested personally on account o f the impossibility now of forwarding along the railway line* their papers the day they are issued, they are also quite justified on public ground* in-taking up the matter warmly. I am informed that the General Manager of Southland -Railwayswas not at all consulted iu the "matter, andi knew nothing whatever of the proposed alteration until he received word of thealterations beii«g decided on. -.- Municipal honours seem to be once-more in , request here. At first it looked as if thjre was to be a walk over in the Worth Ward,, but so far *rom that being the case no less than seven candidates were nominated, ■ namely, Messrs Roche, Hughes, Porter r Hanan, McKay, Wilson, and Cars well. Tlitr exertions, therefore, made, to have a contest in this Ward have been very successful. I should fancy Messrs Roche Wilson, and Carswell would have the best chance of election. For the second ward there will be no contest, but then the three candidates are all.of them individually good men, of far more than average merit, namely, Messrs N. Johnson, J. Kings'and, and J. T. Thomson. For the third ward there are five candidates, namely, J. L. McDonald, Hatch, Ramsay, Garth waite, and P. McEwan, all these are exeellent electieneering men, and that will of itself ghr» them a good show. For the South. Wai< Messrs Whiteford, R. Taylor, Blackwood, 8.Powell, and Moir, are the candidates, and the three last are so greatly superior in- ability, experience, and standing, that they are almost sure to be returned. There is already a fair share of interest taken in the result.
