Few questions have excited so much interest amongst settlers whose property abuts the lliveiton-Qtautau Kai!w;iy as that of bridging Jacob's River at the points known as Upper Ford and Collie's Ford. The necessity of these works has been pleaded in every constitutional manner- possible, but without avail. The most practical step, yet taken in. the matter was that of the deputation which waited upon- the County Council on Monday last. The-fiat has gone forth that-it is the duty of the Council to erect these bridgei, and the responsibility must be accepted with the best grace possible. The question need scarcely be debated which of the two bridges is the most necessary; they are both of vital importance to the prosperity not. only of the district, but of the county as a whole. In dealing with such a question, therefore,it is to be regretted that a feeling of jealousy was imported into the discussion in the County Council. The practice of overrunning the- constable in the matter of expenditure in some of the ridings is not without precedent; but it might be urged that on the occasion referred to a little more policy was used in.' bringing the matter forward. The representatives of Aparima riding, therefore, might with profit study the tactics used on the occasion referred to. A word of advice to. the speakers at the meeting to be held on Monday afternoon: The end sought would be attained more readily by a use of logic than by castiug insinuations at those opposed to them.
