CANTERBURY v. EAST MELBOURNE. Melbourne, January 13. The fourth match by the Canterbury team was commenced to-day against "East Melbourne on the latter’s ground. Neilson lost the toss, and the East Melbourne captain determined to take advantage of the fine wicket that had been provided. Lee and C. Frith opened the bowling, but the latter had to give place to; his brother, who proved to be well on the spot. For East Melbourne Groube, Horan, Alice, Trapp, and ■Dobson batted in capital style, but Goldsmith got 44 by very lucky , play. The eighth wicket fell for 142, and the innings closed for 186. , The smalless of the extras proves how good Ollivier was as longstop, notwithstanding that the ground played very fast. Baker, Ashby, Neilson, and W. Frith fielded in a manner that frequently evoked applause; indeed the fielding all round was, with one exceptios, first-rate. For Canterbury. Ollivier got 37 quickly, and Baker contributed 16 by patient play. The promise he gave of another fine score was again defeated by over-eagerness to score. , Neilson’s innings was far and away the best played in Victoria by any of the team. .I ' Melbourne, January 14. This match was continued to-day, the wicket .playing splendidly. Both W. Frith and Lee played in fine form, but Fuller hit hard, giving no less than four chances to East Melbourne. Horan, Allen, Boyle, and Musgrove, tried their utmost to save the match. 1 - The Canterbury fielding was good, while W.- Frith and Ashby howled in rare form. Ninety runs were required for Canterbury to win, and this ’was easily accomplished without the loss of a wicket. Ollivier-' and Ashby ■ hit the bowling to all parts of the field, the runs being put together so rapidly that the required number was obtained in 58 minutes. ■Seven bowlers -were tried by East Melbourne. When the score stood at 80 Ollivier gave a chance which was not accepted, otherwise the innings of both batsmen was faultless. As Showing the little interest taken in the match, it may be stated that there were only 500 spectators present, despite the fact that East Melbourne had- not previously sustained defeat for two years. The heat has been most intense, and the visitors suffered greatly from it. The wicket played splendidly. Ollivier, Neilson, and W. Frith got their scores, by good all-round play. Campbell and Robinson, who were the first to go to the wickets for the Bohemians,'treated, the, field to some lively work. Frith and Ashby proving highly effective. With- the exception of Riddell, who contributed 32 by faultless; play, none of the batsmen gaye trouble after Darke and Campbell had been got rid of. In Canterbury’s second innings Hartland and Baker made a bit of a stand, the colt; playing with great steadiness, while W. Frith, as is usual with him, knocked his runs up quickly. The innings closed for the small total of 105, after, five of the men had totted up close on 80. Moule’s bowling was first-class. With 67 wanted to win the Bohemians sent in Moiile and Robinson. By the quick disposal of the: former and Riddell, Canterbury

hoped to make it a close finish, but Robinson soon dispelled the illusion. He was in fine form, and though his runs were got with surprising quickness hedid not give a chance. The Bohemians won by eight wickets. The scores were

CANTERBURY V. RICHMOND.

Melbourne, January 17. This match was commenced on the Richmond Club’s ground to-day. Neilson winning the toss. elected to take the field. Turner and Ivory were the first to face the bowling of Charles Frith and Ashby. The game opened well for Canterbury, the two first wickets falling for less than 20, but Manion made a determined stand, defying the efforts of all the bowlers. At the luncheon adjournment lie had made 32, and the telegraph showed 54 for two wickets. • On play being resumed Ashby proved effective for awhile, but was unable to dislodge Manion, who resisted all attacks, and was ably seconded by Thmnas,;the batsmen making it very lively for'thp .field. Shortly before 150 was telegraphed Neilsoii went on with slows, which had the desired effect, Manion being the first to fall a victim to them. The bowling of Canterbury was anything but first-class, while their fielding was indifferent.' The same observations apply to Richmond, whose fielding was not a whit better than their opponents’. The wicket provided was very soft. For Canterbury Neilson arid OlliWor played a capital innings. The following were the scores up to the time of drawing the stumps for the day: —

Total .. .. ... - 193 Melbourne, January IS. This match was continued to-day, the weather being delightfully cool. The wicket did not play at all true, and the bowling of Richmond was anything but good; but they fielded well. :W. Frith batted very freely, bringing the score up to 191 before ho was bowled by Ivory. In Richmond’s second innings Manion was the only one who seemed to be able to make anything of the bowling of the Friths and Ashby r , who were in line form, as- the analysis shows, Charles being credited with five wickets for 16 runs, and Willie two for 10, while Ashby's three were got for 20. Canterbury’s fielding was excellent, and Neilson made two capital catches. Requiring 86 to win, Baker and Hartland were sent in, and the former began so well that at one. time it looked as if it were going to be done without the loss of a wicket; but Hartland, when 20 had been made, put his leg in front, of the wicket, and the same error was shortly afterwards committed by Baker. Ashby and Watsoa kept their wickets intact till the number was obtained, Canterbury thus winning- by 2 runs and eight wickets. The Canterbury men leave here by the' Rotorua on Tuesday, and play a one day’s match at Hobart Town. The scores made on Saturday are detailed below CANTERBURY- FIRST INNINGS.
