THE WESTERN STAR. (PUBLISHED WEEKLY.) SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 1874.

Now that we are to be interviewed by a real live Governor, it behoves us to put our best foot foremost. It is understood active preparations are going forward in Invercargill with the view of making an appropriate reception, and creating a favourable impression of that place. The natural

advantages- possessed, by Riverton so far exceed those of our sister town, that we fear too much stress is to be laid on them, at least we judge so by the unwonted apathy which is so far been shown by our representatives, and the local governing body. That such apathy is not in accordance with the wishes of the residents of both town and country, has been made apparent by the readiness of the Western District Farmers’ Club to co-operate with the town to assist in the reception of his Excellency Sir James Eeegusson, and also by an expression of opinion obtained at a public meeting in the court-house. It is only right that the people should have something more than what may be termed telegraphic acquaintance with those in high places, and when so much depends, not only on the standing and ability of such, but also on their personal acquaintance with our wants and resources, these occasions to cultivate information on both sides should be seized with avidity, even if the natural courtesy inherent in colonial life did not dictate a hospitable welcome and a kindly parting.
