CLOSED TO TRAFFIC
PAKOWHAI BRIDGE REPAIRS BEING CARRIED OUT The large bridge at Pakowhai, on the Napier-Wellington main highway has suffered damage as the result of the flood, and the Hawke's Bay County Council has been forced to close the road to all traffic. The trouble is caused by a cord in the centre span of the bridge, which was weakened in the flood, probably by the action of dri°twood against it. This cord has now subsided. although it did not actually collapse, and the consequence is that the bridge is too weak to bear traffic until repairs have been effected. The county engineer has arranged for repair work to be commenced immediately, but the work will take about a fortnight, so that traffic c,er that road during the term of repairs will be forced to make a detour. The bridge is near the beginning of the poplar avenue, ami people go- | ing to Hastings will be forced to Use I either the Fernhill detour, or come j through Clive.
