MANAWATU GORGE

«> Danger of Falling Rocks STOPS PASSENGER TRAINS PEOPLE BEING TRANSHIPPED (Per Press Association). PALMERSTON N., This Day. Heavy rain last night accentuated the danger of rocks falling from a spot above the railway line in the Manawatu Gorge, from which debris was dislodged a short time ago. In consequence passenger trainsare not using the line to-day, and possibly not to-morrow. Passengers are being transhipped by ’bus between Palmerston North and Woodville. The line is to be closed on Saturday and Sunday to all traffic when remedial measures will be undertaken.

TRAINS DELAYED SLIP IN THE GORGE On account of the slip that fell and partly blocked the railway line in the Manawatu Gorge on Monday night, trains were diverted through the Wairarapa district yesterday. The goods trains were able to travel through the gorge this morning. The fall was not particularly heavy, and it would have been possible for trains to negotiate it yesterday. It was thought better not to run any risks in view of the possibility that the ensuing rain had loosened the ground from which the slip fell, and that other slips might be impending. The morning passenger train from the south yesterday was an hour and 15 minutes late, and the evening express train 55 minutes late.
