MAIN HIGHWAYS
AND THE COUNTIES GOVERNMENT’S LIABILITY WANGANUI, Last Night. “It is not right that counties should be asked to control the main highways,” said the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, at Wanganui to-night. The liability of the Main Highways Board should be wholly the Government’s liability, and the main highways, which were public highways, should be under the control of the Highways Board. This was the only board which in any way justified its existence, he remarked. Secondary or subsidiary roads could come under the counties’ control, but they should definitely not be asked to contribute to the Main Highways Fund. —“Dominion.”
