SECOND EDITION BAND CONTEST

THE OPENING NIGHT HYMN TEST DECIDED (Per Press Association). NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. A memorable scene was presented at the official opening of the New Zealand brass bands’ contest in the flood-lighted natural amphitheatre of Pukekura Park to-night. Ominous low clouds with flashes of lightning in the distance, and a few drops of rain threatened to spoil the opening ceremony, but the rain did not materialise, though oppressive heat remained. The attendance was 3000. A civic welcome was extended by the Mayor, Mr. E. R. C. Gilmour, and othei’ speakers were Mr. E. Palliser, president of the New Zealand Brass Bands’ Association, and Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. Twelve bands of both grades competed on even footing to-night in a hymn test, which was won by Woolston, with Greymouth second, and Port Nicholson and Timaru equal third. Cairns (Queensland) was fifth.

The adjudicator, Mr. A. Baile, said the playing of the bands was ver) uniform and of a high standard. Results of competitions decided to-day and to-night are: — Hymn Test. —Woolston, 96 points. 1; Greymouth Municipal, 92 points, 2; Port Nicholson Silver and Timaru, 92 points, equal, 3. Baritone Solo. —L. G. Hickmhan (Wanganui Garrison), 76 points, 1; J. Jackson (Greymouth), 75 points, 2; A. Winslade (St. Hilda) and R. Fenton (Port Nicholson), equal, 74 points. 3.
