MAGNIFICENT BLAZE
BUT AWESOME AS WELL
FIRE ON TABLE . MOUNTAIN
CAPETOWN, December 26
The magnicent but awesome spectacle of Table Mountain fiercely ablaze confronted people emerging from churches on Christmas morning.
The blaze began on the slopes on the city side and swept up to the peak, whence it dislodged boulders which rattled into the valley. Seven hundred persons are fighting the flames, which swept down the northern side and at one time threatened the Prime Minister’s official residence, but this was saved by a fortuitous change of wind. Already pine belts worth a quarter of a million pounds have been destroyed. The flames were 200 feet high.
