THE WAIPAWA SEAT.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—An open letter to supporters of the National Government. To those who are vitally concerned about the fate of the National Government on the 27 th. This is not a time to hand the Waipawa seat over to Labour . Facts which cannot be overlooked are: —Admittedly Mr. Jull is the official National candidate whilst Mr. Ormond, the Independent candidate, is the electors’ choice, and is receiving overwhelming support from the electors. Those electors opposed to Mr. Ormond, if they do not want to see Labour capture Waipawa must vote solidly for Mr. Ormond, even though they favour Mr. Jull, to keep Labour out.

During last week the Independent candidate has received wonderful ovations at his meetings. At practically every meeting cheers have been given, so much so that after the Waipukurau meeting on Friday several well-known supporters of Mr. Jull offered their whole-hearted support to Mr. Ormond, realising that they must do this to retain the seat against Labour. The fact is now realised that Mr. Jull cannot hold the seat against Labour, and therefore several electors who were prominently antagonistic to Mr. Ormond a week ago, are now known to be 100 per cent, behind him, and are to be commended for their action. The Hon. J. G. Coates agrees, I understand, that there is a grave danger of Labour winning the seat, and further agrees that Mr. Jull has lost popularity. Mr. Coates does not consider that supporters of the National candidate would be disloyal if, in the light of events they voted for the Independent National candidate to avert a disaster.

Ere it is too late I appeal to you to very seriously consider the danger and to give your support to the candidate, Mr. Ormond, and retain the Waipawa Seat for the National Government by voting solidly for Mr. Ormond. The Labour candidate asserts that he is going to get over 2000 votes. With the Democrat candidate in the field I am convinced that Mr. Jull has a hopeless task. Therefore on this occasion it is very necessary to join up with the majority and still further increase an overwhelming decision against Labour. —I am. etc., “OBSERVANDA.” Central Hawke’s Bay, Nov. 23, 1935.
