WAIPAWA SEAT

ADDRESS IN HASTINGS MR W. L. BARKER A general criticism of the National Government and its policy was given in the Hiisitarags Assembly Hall/ by Mr W. L. Barker, Democrat candidate for the Wafpaiwa seat, on Saturday afternoon. Mr N. R.. Jacobsen introduced him to Hie audience. Ills remarks followed closely tho-se included in his previous electiioning Speeches elsewhere, and of the one given by Mr T. C. A. Hislop, his party 'leader, at Waipukurau a fortnight! agio. He reiterated the allegation that the system of bureaucracy do which the Coalition Government subscribed in its policy, paved the way to corruptilon. amid said that w-ith a National Government went, the throttling of thle Press and the subjection of broadcasting to a system of control which meant, the elimination of B class radio stations.

Mr Barker suggested that as the Minister of Finance had brought down a Budget six weeks before the Democrat. policy was brought down; and that, since liflien he had brought down a second Budget'., cither the second was a “fake” or the first so badly and incompetently drawn, that the Tit. Hon. .T. G. Coates had no right to slack re-election to the Treasury benches, let alone the position of Miiniistcr of Finance; The Mortgage Corporation was introduced largely to cover .the .gross mistakes made by the Minister of Finance, he added.

In 'Deference' to the high rate of exchange, he sai'd the Democrat party realised l that the rate was less easily to be reduced than, 'it 'had been to raisfe, and < his party got' into power it would approach the matter cautiously. But, it had a definite policy in this direction and exchange would have to come gradually down. There was no difference actually between the 'National Government’s policy of a debased currency, amid Labour’s policy of currency inflation. ,

He dealt exhaustively with the exchange question, and said there was a need for the paralleling of the New Zealand' currency with sterling, which would have a good effect upon our overseas markets. He quoted figures in proof of his arguments, amid dealt with the differing phases of the National and Democrat.policies. MR TULL’S CAMPAIGN COUNTRY MEETINGS Mr A. E. Jull, official National Government candidate for Waipawa, addressed a large meeting of people of the Wilder Settlement on Saturday night. Mr Bryne presided. Mr Jull ’is answers to several questions were ar by a satisfied audience.
