ACTIVE VOLCANO
ERUPTION ON HAWAII LAVA THREATENS CITY By Telegraph—Copyright—Press Assa< HAWAII, Nov. 23. Moving with unusual speed, two streams of lava from the second largest active volcano in the world, advanced steadily on the Hilo and Kona coast to-day. The north-eastern stream at 3 p.m. wa-S threatening Hilo, being only 25 miles from the city, having moved 15 miles in less than 24 hours. The lava tide, washing down the slope toward the Kona coast, had travelled an equal distance. The coastguard vessel Tiger was ordered to stand by for emergency evacuation of the city and villages along the coast of the island of Hawaii.
Flames shooting up were visable from 60 miles. The lava flow began, with earth tremors and an explosion, at Mokuaweoweo’s northern pit.
