Tennis Court for Nurses A subscriber to the fund for laying down a. tennis court for the benefit of the nurses at the Waipukurau Public Hospital has communicated with the ‘‘Press” drawing attention to the decision of the finance committee of the board to carry out a scheme in concrete, in lieu of asphalt. The opinion is advanced that apart! from the fact that the cost of asphalt formation is greatly less than concrete the playing conditions would be much better were the more resilient matierial used. It appears that almost ■sufficient money has been subscribed, to cover the cost of an asphalt scheme. Basis of Hospital Rating An amendment of the Rating Act, 1925, to empower the collection of hospital rates in any district on the capital value notwithstanding that the rating system in that district was on the unimproved value, was advocated by Mr E. F. Healy (Govt., Wairau) in an urgent question addressed to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. Sir Alexander Young, in the House of Representatives yesterday. The Minister said it was regretted that the request could not be acceded to. 'Such a provision would affect the basis of the Rating Act, which aimed at having all rates in any local authority’s district levied on the same system, whether that system be capital value, annual value, dr unimtoroved value. Value of Concrete Roads

Atj the annual meeting of the Golden Bay Oelment Company held in Wellington yesterday the chairman, Mr Hogarth, expressed regret that more progress had not been made with the construction of concrete roads, the whole of ’tlho material used for which was obtained in New Zealand, and 90 per cent of tho money spent on concrete roads went in wages. The report and balance-sheet, which showed a profit of £346 13/7 in tho past year, were adopted. The retiring director*, Mr J. M. A. Hott, was re-elected and the appointment of Mr C. N. Cathie to the board was confirmed. Mr P. E. Patrick was re-elected auditor. At a meeting of debenture-holders Captatn McArthur was unanimously re-elected, to a seat on the board.
