Central H.B. Sub-Union OLD BOYS DEFEAT TE AUTE MATCH ON SATURDAY In the Central Hawke’s Bay Rugby Sub-Union’s senior competition on Saturday, Old Boys met and defeated Te Ante at Central Park, Waipukurau. The teams were: — Te Aute (red and black): Okeroa, Kihi, Koopu, Kumeroa, Francis, Nicholas, Maako, Rangi, Hirata, Wanoa, Parker, Raureti, Rennie, Porter, Tibble. Old Boys (white): Frederickson, C, Wilson, Hill, James, Piki, O’Dowd, Sharpin, O’Halloran, Anderson, Reilly, A. Wilson, Coles, Phillips, Bowling, Weatherley. Mr. C. M. Wiliamson was the referee.

Old Bo’ys attacked strongly in the opening stages, but a free kick let Te Aute out. Hill intercepted smartly about half-way and got away with a clear field. He seemed sure to score, but attempted to pass out, and Francis intercepted. C. Wilson secured about half-way and made a good run through the opposition, the ball going out in Te Ante’s 25. From the lineout Phillips secured and bullocked his way over. Hill failed to convert. Old Boys 3—Te Aute 0. Old Boys came through again and lined near the corner flag. Te Aute were lucky to force. Piki took a mark in the Red 25, but failed with the kick. Francis, secured at halfway and streaked down the line. His pass infield went astray, but the Red forwards carried on the good work, and following a tussle on the line Rennie went over. Koopu failed to add the minor points. Old Boys 3 —Te Aute 3. Old Boys regained their lead almost immediately, when the ball was punted over the line and O’Dowd, coming up fast, beat a Te Aute man to the touch down. Hill this time made no mistake with the kick. Old Boys B—Te Aute 3.

Scores were coming fast. From a line-out in a handy position Frederickson went over, converting his own try. Old Boys 13 —Te Ante 3. Led by Francis, Te Aute made a sortie into White territory, but they were quickly repelled. The Old Boys forwards, with Weatherley in the van, turned defence into attack and carried hostilities once more into the Red 25. Hill made a dash, but was downed. Old Boys were still attacking when a free kick eased the situation for Te Aute. White came again, but right on the line Kumeroa snapped up the ball and handed to Nicholas, who made a great clearing run to half-way. It looked as if he might go on to score, but Hill was too fast for him and laid him low. Koopu was injured and had to leave the field, Kea taking his place. Piki stemmed a promising Red rush, but Okeroa sent his backs away again, and Francis was going well when he was tackled by O‘’Dowd. The Red backs opened out again, but Piki saved the situation. Maaka fielded and kicked well down. Te Aute were still attacking when the half-time whistle sounded. Old Boys 13—'ute 3.

THE SECOND SPELL On the resumption of play the ball went along the Red backs to Kumeroa. James intercepted smartly and streaked down the line, putting the ball out in the Te Aute 25. A second Te Aute man, Rennie, was injured and had to go off, Fox taking his place. Old Boys battled their way through, and from a scrum near the line the forwards bullocked their way over, Bowling scoring. Hill raised the flags with his kick Old Boys 18 —Te Ante 3. Then came a sensation, when Kihi secured well out and ran right through Old Boys’ defence, passing near the line to Nicholas who, not content with a try in the corner, went right round to touch down between the posts —a great try. Ktfnieroa found no difficulty with the kick. Old Boys 18—Te Aute 8. Play was moving at a lightning rate now, and excitement ran high in the crowd. Old Boys were attacking when Francis secured and cacthing his opponents out of position got away with only the fullback to pass. He punted over Sharpin’s head, but failed to take the ball again, the ball going out near the corner. Old Boys cleared from the line-out and swept down to the at-

tack again, Hill capping the movement with a try, which C. Wilson failed to convert. Old Boys 21 —Te Aute 8. From a line-out out at half-way, C. Wilson secured and ran to within a yard of the Red line, where he went down to a good tackle by Fox. Okeroa handed to Kea at half-way and the latter streaked down the line, kicked and lacked sufficient speed to recover. Almost imihediately wanoa, Kihi and Parker came again in a great passing rush culminating in a try by the last mentioned in the corner. The kick failed.

The game ended: Old Boys 21 —Te Aute 11.

TAKAPAU BEAT WAIPAWA

CHAMPIONSHIP SECURE

Defeating Waipawa by 20 jKlints to 3 on Saturday, Takapau are assured of the Central Hawke’s Bay Rugby championship for 1935. From the kick-off Waipawa forced play into the Takapau twenty-five. Takapau relieved with a long kick up the line and took play back to halfway. Takapau were then pressing, but Rupuha relieved with a long kick down the line, and Holt following up secured and passed the ball on to Higgs, who scored. Collett was unsuccessful with the kick. — Waipawa 3, Takapau nil. Takapau took play up the field from the kick-off and their backs were putting in some good work. A free kick enabled Waipawa to come back to half-way. Even play in midfield followed, then Takapau took the ball to the Waipawa line, Waipawa relieving the position with a forcedown. Takapau were again pressing, but a free kick for Waipawa saw play go back down the field, and shortly after Collett missed with a penalty kick. Takapau then took play back to the Waipawa twentyfive, and an attempt at goal was unsuccessful. The Takapau team was now on the attack and the backs were keeping the ball moving the whole time. From a passing rush the ball went to Donovan, who secured a try. Rue missed with the kick. —Waipawa 3. Takapau 3. Soon after this Donovan again scored, taking the ball from half-way, Aldrich, adding the minor points. — Takapau 8, Waipawa 3.

The score remained the same at half-time.

The Change Over.

From the kick-off after the interval Takapau took the play into Waipawa territory, and several dangerous situations were only saved by marks. The play for the most part was in the Waipawa twenty-five, breaking occasionally back to halfway, and on two occasions Takapau missed scoring only by minor breaches. Johnson was unsuccessful with a penalty kick, but soon after Aldrich converted a further free kick. —Takapau 11, Waipawa 3. At this stage Osborne (Waipawa) was compelled to leave the field through an injury. On resuming Aldrich had a further unsuccessful attempt at a penalty. The ball went to the Takapau backs, and Donovan opened up a back movement, passing the ball on to Thompson, who scored. Aldrich missed with the kick.—Takapau 14, Waipawa 3. From the kick-off Takapau again got possession of the ball, and after a fine run, Aldrich added another try. —Takapau 17, Waipawa 3. Takapau were now continually pressing, but Waipawa relieved and the forwards took the ball up the field. Collett (Waipawa) retired at this stage following a knock on the nose. Just before the final whistle Edgecombe secured a further try for Takapau. the kick missing.

with 22 points. Celtic beat M. 8.0.8. by 15 points to 11, Technical 0.8. accounting for Havelock North by the same score. Napier H. 5.0.8., Pirates and Hastings also gained vic lories.

CANTERBURY BEATEN ELEVEN POINTS TO EIGHT t Per Press Association.i WELLINGTON, Last Night. Canterbury, the Ranfurly Shield holders, were defeated by the Wellington Rugby representatives by 11 points to eight on Saturday. Wellington started at a great clip, scoring 11 points quickly, but thereafter the game was very even, and Canterbury got to within three points of Wellington midway through the second spell, but they were unable to improve on their figures. In a bright and spectacular game which was entertaining but not good football, Wanganui defeated Southland to-day by 34 points (seven tries, five converted, and a penalty goal) to 31. (six tries, five converted, and a penalty goal). The weather was fine, the ground firm, and the ball lively. At about 4 o’clock, however, a light rain fell and continued intermittently for the rest of the second half.

(Southland gained a very large share of the ball in the first spell, ana, though the pace and opportunism of the Wanganui forwards made them a constant menace, led 18 —8 at halftime. The (Southland forwards showed plenty of dash, while the backs, although somewhat listless, had a dan-

gerous scoring man at centre in Crawford.
