GUNMEN GET THEIR MAN
AFTER FORTNIGHT’S WAIT ESCAPE OF SUSPECTS By Telegraph—Copyright—Press As. CHICAGO, July 18. Louis “two gun” Alterie, one of the few surviving prominent gangsters of the prohibition decade, was assassinated to-day by gunmen hiding in a building across the street from his home. Since the repeal of the dry laws, Alterie has been active in the affairs of a powerful union of theatre janitors, and it is assumed rival gangsters killed him in an effort to gain control of the organisation. It was the daily custom of Mrs. Alterie to drive her husband to his office, but to-day she delayed a few minutes in the foyer of their apartment building where she heard a burst of gunfire. Hurrying -to the street she found her husband’s crumpled body. He died before he reached hospital, twelve bullets having pierced his body. The police found the room across the street had been occupied by two men for a fortnight. They were apparently keeping watch for an opportune time to kill their victim. A high powered rifle and a score of discharged shells were found. Both men escaped.
