SECOND EDITION HOSPITAL RATING

CONSIDERED INADEQUATE RATEPAYERS BURDENED The question of hospital rating was discussed this week at a combined meeting of representatives of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union and the New Zealand Counties’ Association. The members of the committee were:— Farmers’ Union: Messrs W. J. Polson, M.P., W. W. Mulholland, L. Hammond, R. Oakley and H. E. Blyde, Counties’ Association: Messrs A. E. .lull, M.P. C. J. Talbot, G. A. Monk, and W. Morrison. Reporting to the annual conference of the Farmers’ Union yesterday, Mr Polson said the committee, after full deliberation, passed the following resolution: “That the present system of hospital taxation is inequitable because the burden of taxation rests too heavily on the ratepayers, and because those who benefit, most contribute least toward the cost. The committee believes that provision for hospital finance should be compulsory and universal. It recommends that lhe Counties’ Association and the Farmers’ Union should set up committees to meet a committee of the Hospital Association to discuss the details of any proposed scheme and with power to appoint a qualified investigator to prepare a report.”
