July 17. ■ The liner Niagara, which left VicI toria at 5 p.m. with the Australian I Premier, Mr J. A. Lyons, aboard, col- ' lided with the freighter King Egbert I 40 miles off Victoria. Both ships are ! returning to Victoria under their own I power for> a survey. The bows of both ships were damj aged in the collision, which occurred in the Straits of Juan de Fuca, 23 * miles west of Race Rocks. It is un- ! derstood that the collision occurred . in fog. The Niagara was the first to ! send an S.O.S. It is understood that no one was injured. No request was made for salvage ships. The Niagara is reported to be leak- ! ing. I Captain T. V. Hill, commander of J the Niagara, took steps to safeguard I the passengers in case of emergency, j The King Egbert was en route to ’ Victoria from Port Alberni. j A later message stated that the Niagara anchored late to-night in Royal Roads, Esquimalt. She may enter dry dock in the morning. The Canadian-Australian Line at I Vancouver later stated that the Niagara was only slightly damaged and would probably proceed again tomorrow.
