UNPAID RATES
PENALTIES CLAIMED MAGISTRATE’S DECISION (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Deciding that the mortgagee was not liable for a penal addition unless he failed to pay the original amount of 'the rate within six months and fourteen days after the d.emand had been made upon him, Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., to-day gave judgment against the Eastbourne Borough Council, who sued the Rangitikei Permanent Land, Building and Investment Society for arrears of penalties. The occupier had defaulted in payment of rates over three years but declined to pay the penalties as having complied within the statutory period of demand being made to it.
