MEAT AGREEMENT

SAVING OF £1,000,060 TO NEW ZEALAND By Telegraph—Copyright —Press As WELLINGTON, Last Night. The acting-Prime Minister, Sir Alfred Ranson, referring to the meat agreement, said that the fact that there was no levy on mutton and lamb would mean a saving of over £BOO,OOO or £1,000,000 in New Zealand currency. Another favourable aspect was that a short-term agreement was now eliminated. It was very gratifying to note that a beef agreement had been fixed which enabled New Zealand to supply for the July-December, 1935, half-year 548,000 cwt. of beef and veal. This was the amount which was shipped in the same period of 1934 and represented an increase over 1932. Although the amount of chilled beef (66,000 cwt.) seemed small it was very satisfactory. AUSTRALIA’S SHARE SYDNEY, Puly 17. The acting Prime Minister, Dr Earle Page, commenting on Mr Elliot’s statement on meat, said: “The essential factor of the new agreement is recognition of Australia s right to an expanding share of mutton and lamb imports. Australia's share next year will be 20 per cent, more than in the Ottawa agreement for the year of 1932; in fact, it assures us of an outlet for the whole of our lamb and mutton up to next year.

“The agreement has been well received by the meat industry, while the Commonwealth Government is pleased that the agreement is on a yearly basis rather than quarterly, which is very difficult to work. Australia is now in a good strategic position for future discussions with England.”
