“NOWHERE TO GO”

MAN SLEEPING OUT REMANDED IN CUSTODY Pleading guilty in the Magistrate’s Court in Christchurch, on Wednesday, to a technical charge of being idle and disorderly in that he had no lawful visible means of support, Herbert Granville Moon, a labourer, aged 29 years, was remanded for a week in custody for medical attention, by Mr. H. A. Young, S.M. Moon, ill-clad and shod, and with the appearance of being in a weak physical condition, hung his head when he was asked to plead in response to the charge. "I wasn’t disorderly,” he said, with difficulty. “But I was out of work and had no money.”

Sleeping in Country. “There is no suggestion that he was disorderly,” said Senior-Sergeant Calwell. “We think he might be a bit weak mentally. He was found yesterday wandering about. He said he had lately been sleeping in the country and had no money, no work, and nowhere to go. He is suffering from lack of food.” Accused had been for a time in the Salvation Army Home, continued the Senior-Sergeant, but said he would not go back there. The police thought that accused was in need of medical attention because of his condition.

“I might be a bit run-down physically, but I am all right otherwise,” said accused, when asked if he had any objection to being remanded for a week in custody.

The Magistrate explained that the remand was intended to give him a chance to recover his strength, and to have medical attention.

“I’ve got nowhere to stop,” said accused,- and was led from the box. The Senior-Sergeant said afterwards that it was difficult to get information from Moon, but that he said he had walked from Springston yesterday.
