The Sales Tax.
As the general level of prices rises through the application of a tax, the consumer finds a greater inducement to conserve his resources, and to look for goods at lower prices. Thus the sale of the inferior article is encouraged at the expense of high quality goods. In almost every branch of trade there has been a marked advance in the low-priced lines, and goods of high quality have suffered because their prices appear too high. Tarawera Eruption. Among present visitors to Fending is Rev. Samuel Griffith, a retired Methodist Minister of Auckland. Tn 1886, the year of the destructive eruption of Mount Tarawera, which destroyed those wonders of the world, the Pink and White Terraces, and caused the death of over 100 Natives and six Europeans, Mr. Griffith was stationed at Tauranga, which town was enveloped in complete darkness for many hours on the memorable 10th of June, the day of the disaster. Two days later Mr. Griffith rode the 40 miles to Rotorua via the Oropi Bush through an area completely covered with the buish-grey volcanic ash. On the Sunday afternoon he took part in the funeral of the six European victims. There were five members of the Hazard family and a young tourist named Edwin ! Bainbridge, to whose memory a monument was subsequently erected in Rotorua.
