LOSS TO THE JAPANESE
MAHENO STRANDED VESSEL DEEP IN SAND By Telegraph—Copyright Press As. BRISBANE, July 14. Attempts to salvage the stranded steamer Maheno at Frazer Island have been abandoned. The vessel is water-logged and heeling over to starboard, and there is a large hole in her side, through which the water is rushing. She is iplso deeply embed ded in the sand. It is stated that the Union Company sold the Maheno to the Japanese for £11,750, Australian currency, but, with other expenses since incurred, the total loss will be in the neighbourhood of £17,000, which is not covered by insurance. The Oonah will pick up the Maheno’s crew. ANOTHER SHIP PURCHASED By Telegraph—Copyright—Press Assn BRISBANE, July 14. Thirty-two Japanese arrived by the Atsuta Mara. They will leave Sydney by the Aorangi next Thursday for New Zealand to take away another Union Company steamer, the Kaitoke, which is going to the ship-breakers.
