THE HEAVY DELUGE

North of Auckland STREETS RESEMBLED RIVERS IN WHANGAREI BOROUGH (Per Press Association.) WHANGAREI, This Day. The latest reports of flooding in (he North, caused by the deluging downpour early yesterday, give returns with a maximum of 41 inches of rain for the previous 24 hours. In Whangarei, where several streets resembled rivers, much damage has been occasioned, affecting the butter-factory and business premises, while further north, Kawakawa and Kaitaia, also other centres, have been deeply inundated and generally considerable loss entailed by the demolition of bridges, as well as the scouring of roads. The temporary dislocation of road and railvray services in a number of places has now been remedied in most instances.

RAILWAY SERVICES AFFECTED A later message from Kawakawa says that the fall was akin to a cloudburst, exceeding 51 inches. The iacecourse was submerged to a depth of ten feet, the railway washed out in several places between Kakakawa and Taumareri, while a number of breaches have occurred between Otiria and Motatau, but it is anticipated that the full services will be restored by to-night. At Kawakawi two families were rescued from swamped ’ houses, just in time, by men who waded neck deep in the water.
