Busiest Hour for Fires.

For many years Deputy-Superin-tendent J. A. Milverton, of the Palmerston North Fire Brigade, has kept extensive statistical records of the incidence of fire calls. He has discovered that the busiest hour of the day for the brigade, is between 8 and 9 p.m. The least troublesome hour is from 6 to 7 a.m. The busiest day of the week is Sunday and the day upon which the least number of calls is received, Wednesday. More calls are received during the month of January than during any other, and the least number in May. Total calls received during the five years number 557. The busiest year was that ending in March, 1933; 122 calls were received in the 12 months. Next in order came 1929-30, with 121; 193334, with 109; 1931-32, with 105; and 1932-33, with 100. Eltbam Pig Hunters’ Find. While pig hunting in the Tongahoe Valley during the Easter vacation an Eltham party discovered a kiwi. They were traversing some heavily wooded country at the time when suddenly the dogs appeared to scent something ?nd dashed off in full pursuit of a swiftly moving brown object. Thinking it was a pig the members of the party crowded round the bush into which the "pig” had sought refuge, while the dogs appeared to be very excited. On. a closer investigation they found a dead kiwi lying under the branches. It appears that the dogs killed it in the chase. This is very unfortunate (says the Argus) as these birds are now fast becoming a very rare species. Two Maoris who accompanied the party stated that they had captured one the day before and after holding it for a short time they released it.
