THE TURF

HASTINGS MEETING SPEED A WINNER HASTINGS, Saturday. The second autumn meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, held at Hastings to-day, attracted a large attendance. Good racing was enjoyed in brilliant sunshine, and the £6854 put through the totalisator probably would be satisfactory to the club treasury. However, the turnover was £463 10/- less than last year’s £7317 10/-. After Gainsfid had won the President’s Handicap, Stipendiary Steward Sandilands instituted an inquiry which resulted in the suspension of R. Marsh for one month on a charge of careless riding. Marsh rode Gainsfid. One of the horses who suffered severely nearing the finish was Aesculus, who was nearly down. B. H. Morris had a good day in the saddle, turning his five opportunities to three firsts and a second. Results additional to those received on Saturday afternoon are as follow: Akitio Handicap.—3/1 Conference and 4/3 Tres Sec, dead-heat 1; 1/3 High Grader 3. Twyford Handicap.—l/1 Hunting Jay 1; 3/3 Hybiscus 2; 4/4 Grumpy

Okawa Handicap.—2/1 Speed 1; 3/3 Souchong 2; 1/2 Royal Hunting 3. AT AVONDALE AUCKLAND, Saturday. The Avondale Jockey Club s autumn meeting opened to-day in fine weather. The track was firm. There was a good attendance, and the totalisator investments were £24,011 10/-, against £20,605 last year, an increase of £3406 10/-. Jonathan broke the course record by running the Foley Memorial mile and a quarter in 2.4 1-5. Three favourites — Jonathan, Coronilla and Impasto — were successful, but there were several good dividends, Morehu and Expectancy both paying double figures on the win machine. Results additional to those received on Saturday are as follow: — Avondale Highweight Handicap.— 4/4 Courthaven 1; 2/2 Gigantic 2; 1/1 Ornamental 3. Chevalier Handicap.—7/7 Expectancy 1; 2/2 Coronis 2; 3/4 Alpinus 3. Foley Memorial Handicap. — 1/1 Jonathan 1; 5/4 Carfex 2; 8/8 King March 3. Won by a length and a half; neck. Time, 2.4 1-5, a course record.

Oakley Handicap.—l/1 Coronilla 1; 2/2 Waitaka 2; 4/3 Lifeguard 3. Railway Handicap. — 4/5 Puss Moth 1; 5/4 Hampton Park 2; 3/2 British Columbia 3. Whau Handicap.—2/3 Werohia 1; 4/4 Dark Marble 2; 3/2 King Musk 3. Titirangi Handicap.—l/1 Impasto 1; 3/3 King's Archer 2; 2/2 King Mestor 3. An inquiry was held into the riding of Gigantic in the Highweight Handicap. Evidence was given that the horse was ridden by F. Thomson to instructions by the owner and trainer. The committee found that the instructions were practically carried out by the jockey, who did not use his best judgment.

A LUCKY INVESTMENT Racing is full of interesting incidents, and the victory of Lady Kyra in the Onslow Stakes at Ellerslie recently recalled a lucky investment made by her owner (Mr H. E. Cleland). When present at the Wellington Cup meeting 12 month's ago last

January, Mr Cleland had £1 on a winner paying £22, and there and then he decided that if there were any cheap lots offering at the yearling sales at Trentham next day ho would be a buyer. When a filly by Lord Warden —Blonde was paraded sho attracted so little attention that -Mr Cleland’s bid of a “tenner” secured her for him. She has proved a good investment, as she has won twice in her three starts.
