SECOND EDITION WAIPUKURAU COUNTY

Council’s Monthly Meeting HELD THIS MORNING. GENERAL MATTERS DISCUSSED. The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau County Council was held this morning, Cr. A. C. Russell, chairman, presiding over the following members: — Crs. M. Tansey, A. W. Elliott, W. T. Edgecombe, W. Matthews, L. M. Mockton and P. F. W'all. The clerk-engineer (Mr R. B. Price) was in attendance. Assessment Court. The clerk advised that one nomination had been received for the position of assessor to the Assessment Court, that of Mr J. D. Todd.. Mr Todd was appointed. Hospital Levy. The secretary of the Hospital Board wrote asking the council to pay the first quarter’s levy, which fell due on April 1, at last year’s rates (£147 3/1), subject to adjustment later. —Granted. Chess Club. The Waipukurau Chess Club applied for the use of the council chambers one night a week. The request was granted, the rent being 3/- per night. State Advances Liability. The Waitomo County Council, in a circular letter, asked what assistance the council would be prepared to give in the event of a test case being undertaken to decide the question of the liability of the State Advances Department for rates as mortgagee of freehold lands. , On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to reply that the council considered the matter one for the counties’ conference. Rates Collected. The clerk submitted the following statement showing the rates struck and the amount collected in each riding:— Hatuma: struck, £Bl4 4/11; collected, £778 5/5. Mt. Herbert: £5lB 4/1; £4Bl 8/3. Purimu: £632 1/6; £632 1/6. Arrears collected: —Hatuma, £232 18/5; Mt. Herbert, £ll2 16/5; Purimu, £235 0/5.
