SECOND EDITION COLLEGE RUGBY

University v. Te Ante POPULAR ANNUAL FIXTURE LARGE CROWD WATCHES GAME A large crowd assembled at Central Park, Waipukurau, today to watch the annual Rugby match between Victoria University College and Te Aute College, one of the most popular annual fixtures in Central Hawke’s Bay. Mr. P. R. Smyrk was the referee. The teams were: — Te Ante (red and black): — Rupuhu, Hanita, Williams, Nicholas, Durie, Merritt, Rennie, Herewhini Parker, M. Maaka, Emery, Huata Rehu, Yates, and Raureti. University (green and gold):— Blandford, Griffiths, Wilton, Ellis, Smith, Adams, Wallace, Scotney (captain), Andrews, Burke, Halstead, Brown, Broad, McWhinnie, and Desborough. The game opened at a fast pace, all the Green backs handling. The ball went from Wallace to Adams r.o Smith to Wilton, to Griffiths, who was neatly blocked by Hanita. Adams sent his backs away again, the ball flashing out to Ellis, who was downed in the nick of time by Nicholas. Adams secured again and a dangerous loose passing bout ensued in the Red twenty-five, the ball eventually going out in the corner. The Green backs, who were throwing the ball about in fine style, opened out again, but Wilton’s pass was wild. ’Varsity forwards bullocked their way through and a score seemed imminent, but a 5-yards scrum was awarded. Griffiths, the ’Varsity winger got away and was going well till Hanita laid him low. Play centred at half-way till Blandford with a powerful kick lined well down. Adams broke away and made a brilliant jinky run, before passing out to Scotney, to Wilton, who missed. Another loose passing rush followed and Wilton was looking dangerous when he ran into a bunch of Reds.

Te Aute had an awkward few minutes till a free kick let them out. Griffiths tried to work the blind side of a scrum, but was pushed out. Smith led another Green sortie, but Rupuhu was on the alert and kicked for the line. Ellis secured and made a dash for it, but was dragged down right on the line, Rupuhu and Hanita clearing. Green were awarded a free kick in a likely position, but failed to collect. Hunter stemmed another Green rush led by Adams, who was playing a keen, incisive game. Wilton put the ball out in the corner and following the line-out Green forced their way over in a bunch, but Te Aute forced.

Green broke through to the Red twenty-five, where a scrum took place. The ’Varsity hookers got the ball, but Wallace the half, was quickly downed. Adams snapped up the leather and streaked across field, handing to Wallace, to Smith, to Wilton, who dashed over for a nice try. Scotney failed to convert. ’Varsity 3 Te Aute O

Stung by the reverse, Te Ante backs got going well and penetrated Green territory. Durie’s pass was not taken and a likely movement broke down, Green forwards sweeping through. The ball was punted over the line and went “dead.” Blandford, ’Varsity full-back, created a sensation, when he snapped up the ball in play and potted a great goal. ’Varsity 7 Te Ante ,• ■ • O Realising that things were looking serious, Te Aute made a desperate effort, Herewhini, Merritt, Durie, Williams and Hanita handled in a sparkling rush, which carried play to the Green twenty-five. Hanita inpassed to Durie, who was only a yard off a well-earned try when he was dragged down. It was a great effort. From a scrum, the ball was lined again in the corner. Maaka secured in the line-out and it looked as if he was over, but there were too many “hands.” Half-time came immediately with the score—’Varsity - f • * Te Ante 0 ’Varsity, territorially, had had the best of the game so far, their backs handling well.

At the opening of the second half, Williams broke away and passed to Merritt, who made a great run, but was forced out. Te Aute were awarded a free in an easy position, but Hanita’s kick was a failure. Te Aute were making it willing now in a desperate effort to retrieve their fortunes. They forced their way through to the Green twentyfive, where, from a line out, the ball flashed along the Red backs to Williams who was dragged down at the critical moment. Out it came again, but once more, when a try looked likely, Williams hung on too long and was downed. Nicholas snapped up the ball, however, and lined in the corner. Adams held up another passing rush and Greens cleared after an awkward few minutes. Walace, Adams and Smith were prominent in a Green rush, but the last-mentioned was tackled by Parker. Rupuhu got going well and whipped the ball out to Nicholas. They were pulled back for a forward pass. Green were going well again, when Rupuhu, who was playing a sound game at full back, cleared with a snappy kick. From behind halfway, Merritt broke away, gave a nice dummy, and streaked down-field. He passed to Nicholas who made a great run and might have scored had he gone on alone; but he looked round for support which was not there, and was lost. The sensation of the game came when, as the ball went out along the Green backs from a scrum behind half-way, Hanita made a brilliant interception. He caught the ’Varsity men right off their guard and had a clear run half the length of the field. To the accompaniment of terrific cheering he touched down just behind the posts. Merritt made no mistake with the kick. ’Varsity ... . T Te Aute 5 Green swept down in a fierce retaliatory rush, but were quickly repelled by the Red forwards, who, led bv Yates, turned defence into attack. At, this stage Blandford, the ’Varsity full-back, who had played an invaluable game, was injured and had to go off. The Reds were pressing hard now, keeping Green penned in their own twenty-five. The backs opened out again and Durie was looking dangerous when he was neatly I grassed. Following a scrum, Durie and Merritt were nearly over, but couldn’t quite clinch matters, and Adams cleared. Russell went on in the forwards to fill the gap caused by Blandford’s injury. Wilton led the Greens in a dribbling rush, which carried play to the Red line, where they were held up just in the nick of time by Herewhini. A free kick let Red out.. The game ended immediately with the score — ’Varsity ............ T Te Aute 5 ROSS SHIELD FINAL CENTRAL H.B.
