Heretaunga Dairy Co. A meeting’ of the. shareholders and suppliers of the Heretaunga Dairy Co., Ltd., in the Waipukurau, Ruatamwha. and surrounding districts, is to be held in the Masonic Hall, Waipukurau, on Tuesday, at 1.30 p.m., when the directors will be in attendance. The balance sheet of the company and the operations for the past season are to be considered at this meeting. A Notable Sight In the Heavens. Jupiter and Venus, which have been drawing nearer each other in the western sky, now present a brilliant spectacle just after sunset. Last night they were nearer than for many years and Mars was also be in conjunction. Their seeming proximity was, however, an optical illusion, for Jupiter a‘nd Venus are 450 million miles apart, and while the former is 583 million miles distant from the earth, the latter is a mere 127 million miles away. Chinaman Fined £5O. At the Hastings Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr A. M„ Mowlem, S.M., Harry See Chan Fang, alias George Chong, aged 23, was charged with, on August 12, being found in possession of prepared opium. A plea of not guilty was entered. “He is asking too much when he asks me to believe that he did not know the contents of the parcels he was carrying,” said his Worship in entering a conviction. “He will be fined £5O and T don’t know that I should make it even more. Mr Morrison, counsel for the accused, intimated that the fine would be paid. Counted on the Field Au amusing incidppt occurred in a junior Rugby match on the Wanganui racecourse recently. Two . were playing, one side being barracked rather enthusiastically by its senior members, who had just concluded a game-. on Spriggens Park. Suddenly there was a bout of fisticuffs, and two players, one from each side, received their marching orders. A little later a barracker politely asked the referee how many players there should he on the field. “Fourteen on each side.” said the official. “My eyes may be deceiving me, but I believe one side has fifteen,” replied the barracker. The referee, thus informed, stopped the game and counted. One team certainly was at full strength and one player had to retire. It is\ thought that the mistake occurred through one member leaving the field temporarily to receive attention from the ambulance. Before he returned a reserve had been called upon, and when ordering off was made 'the team actually had 15 players.

Seed Stripping Case. At the Waipukurau Court to-day before Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M.. the case in which Charles Bushett, Waipjswa, claimed to recover from G. E. Merrikcn, farmer, the sum of £4O ss. as damages, was concluded. Plaintiff claimed that he entered into a contract with defendant to strip certain grass-seed on the latter’s property, in return for 50 per cent, of the proceeds; that Merriken had prevented him from carrying out the contract by proceeding with it himself before the seed was ripe: and that he had thereby suffered loss and expense incurred in obtaining and removing his plant and horses to Hatuma, and also the benefits of his share of the grass-seed. The defence was that plaintiff himself had substantially broken the contract, as. when less than half the seed had been stripped, ho was offered all that remained, but had refused it. Remarking that therw had been a lack of reasonable give nnd ’■n«e on both sides, his Worship gave judgment for defendant for £5 onlv.

Office of St. John Ambulance. The office of the Waipukurau suncentre is at the private office of Mr G. Reg. Cook in Gaisford Terrace, where all interviews and telephone calls must be made during the hours fixed by the committee of the sub-centre, viz., 5.30 to 7 p.m. daily.—Advt. “Where shall we go?” That is the question which invariably crops up every week-end. Now, how about a run through to Napier? The new town’s great, and the Parade “beats the band.” Don’t bother about packing a hamper, as the “Trocadero” tea-room in Hastings street is open all day Sundays, and makes a special feature of catering for visitors. It’s real cosy, too, if the day’s cold. May we expect you this week-end?* Open Sundays.*
