SERIOUS DROUGHT
... —<s> Worst For Several Years CAUSES BLINDNESS IN SHEEP ANXIETY AT PORANGAHAU Fanners in the Porangalian district are feeling considerable anxiety over one of the worst draughts experienced for several years. There has been no rain worth mentioning for more than two month, while high winds have further intensified the trouble. Pastures are parched brown with not a tinge of green showing anywhere. It appears that a strip of country along the coast from Akitio right to Cape Kidnappers has missed even what little rain has fallen in other parts of the district. Unless rain comes this month, prospects of feed for the coming winter will be very bad indeed. Stock are already showing the serious effects of the drought. Most farmers are complaining that a number of sheep have gone blind, an affliction which is supposed to be due to shortage of water.
