The Golf Season. A cordial invitation is being extended by the Waipukurau Golf Club to members of kindred clubs to attend the opening of the season on Saturday. A mixed Canadian foursome will be play, ed, players to arrange their own partners. Bible Class Conference. About 45 Presbyterian Bible Class boys, mostly from Hastings and Napier, attended a study conference during the Easter holidays at Hatuma. The boys had the use of the school and the Domain Hall. The Rev. J. T. Macky, of Dannevirke, acted as camp father, and the Rev. D. J. Shaw, of Hastings, supervised the studies. The boys thoroughly enjoyed their short stay and expressed a hope that they would return another year. Waipawa Tennis Competitions. Following arc the final results of the Waipawa Tennis Club’s competitions:— Championships: Ladies’ singles, Miss Britten; men’s, V. Hobin. Ladies doubles, Misses Britten and I. Rust; men’s, N. Macpherson and G. Curran; combined doubles, Miss M. Clark and J. Knobloch. Handicaps: Ladies’ singles, Miss Britten; men’s, V. Hobin; ladies’ doubles. Mrs K. Dailey and Miss M. Bawden; men’s, V. Hobin and W. Christensen; combined doubles. Miss Davy and W. Sawyer. Red Cross Examination Seventeen pupils at the Waipukurau District. High School sat the Red Cross first aid examination recently, and all passed, three with honours. Results were:- —Passed with honours: Doris Thomsen, Muriel Goodeve, and Dorothy Marfell; passed: Helen Monteith. M. Monteith, Jean Stoddart. Nancy Reidy, Gladys Fairweather. Marjorie Urquhart, .T. Faithful, Mary Fleming, Ida Sharpin, Ngaire Staines, Wynn Malkin, Leone Gronne, Valda Renner and -Maj- Peddle. Collision Witn Pole. About 5.45 p.m. on Saturday t fiveseater ear driven by Mr W. Johnston, 6 Quinn’s Road, Shirley, who was accompanied by Mr T. Naylor. 35 Walker Street, Christchurch, when travelling towards Christchurch collided with - an electric light pole on the Main North Road about a mile north of Kaiapoi. The force of th<? impact split the pole and the car waw wrecked. The occupants, who sustained only cuts and bruises, were attended to by Dr. M. Ramsay. Chi-ysantheiwnm Show. An “at home” arranged by Mrs T. Thompson and Mrs J. H. James, was held yesterday in connection with the forthcoming chrysanthemum show. The Methodist Hall was beautifully decorated, and arranged in drawing-room style. There was a good attendance, the programme consisting of musical and other items. Competitions were held, the winners being Mesdames H. Rowlands, (Dr.) Walker, of Waipawa, and Griffiths. Songs were contributed by Mesdames Griffiths and Dyson, Rev. H. Dyson and Mr J. Barker; elocutionary items by Mrs Walker; while Miss Jones played the accompaniments during the afternoon. A very dainty afternoon tea was dispensed. A number of attractive gifts were received, affording a fine collection for the various stalls.

E. ts-uoper, the returning officer for Napier, would insist upon the letter of the Act, Mr Tim McCarthy had 90 seconds’ grace yesterday morning before acceptance of his nomination might be refused. The clock in the town clerk’s office in the Napier Borough Council building showed one and a half minutes to twelve, and there was no sign of Mr McCarthy, though his nomination paper for the Napier Borough Council and the Napier Harbour Board were expected. In the minds of some of those gathered in the room there probably arose the speculation that possibly he had been dissuaded from standing '.... but 90 seconds before noon the missing yet expected candidate hurried in. “It isn’t twelve yet,” he said, smiling at the returning officer.
