EDUCATIONAL
, TEACHERS’ INSTITUTE ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Waipawa branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was held at the Waipukurau District High School on Saturday morning last. Mr. J. A. Lockhart, president, occupied the chair. There was an attendance of seventeen members. The annual report disclosed a membership roll of 43, and* the balance sheet showed a satisfactory position, the credit balance being £l2 9s 6d. It was stated that during the year addresses had been delivered by Mr. E. Barry, of Palmerston North, on Institute matters; by Mr. Harker, of Waipawa, on Crime and Punishment; by Mr. L. R. Cutforth, of the Waipukurau District High School, on the Panama Canal. Six meetings had been held during the year at which the attendance had been satisfactory. The report drew the attention of members to the need for unity and the danger of sectional divisions in the ranks of the profession as a whole.
The annual subscription was fixed at £1 3/-, the same as last year, and it. was decided to approach several non-members urging them to join the branch. It was also resolved to support the Manawatu branch in nominating Mr E. Barry for the vice-presi-dency of the Institute. The Central Executive’s report on the Education Amendment Bill was discussed and it was decided to inform the Central Executive of the branch's approval of the report and particularly the claim lor teachers' right of appeal against non-appoint-ment. With regard to the retirement of Mr. Parkinson from the position of general secretary, appreciation was expressed by members of the services of Mr. Parkinson, and the sum of £2 was voted towards a presentation.
