POULTRY BILL
Is Now Held Up EVIDENCE TO *E HEARD MOTION OF SIR FRANCIS BELL (Per Press Association; WELLINGTON, This Day. The Legislative Council this morning agreed to amendments in the Finance Bill No. 4, made last night by the House of Representatives. The Leader (Hon. R. Masters) moved the second reading of the Poultry Amendment Bill. The Hon. J. A. Hanan expressed the opinion that the council would not be justified in passing the bill without hearing evidence from those whom it would affect. This view was supported by Hon. Sir Francis Bell, who said that evidence had been taken by a committee of the Lower House and it had presented an unfavourable report. The council should at least have had the opportunity of hearing evidence which had convinced the Lower House committeemen. Mr. Masters said the poultry people desired the passage of the Bill during the present session in order that they could take advantage of next year’s export season, and it was not right that they should be debarred at a time like the present from organising the industry to the best advantage. Sir Francis Bell's motion was carried by 7 votes to 5, thereby preventing the passage of the Bill this session.
