H.B. RAM FAIR

SECOND DAY’S SELLING

SOUTHDOWNS AND RYELANDS

The second day of the Hawke’s Bay Ram Fair was held at the Tomoana Show Grounds, Blastings, yesterday, when there was a large attendance of buyers. The principal offerings for the day in the flock line were Southdowns, and in the afternoon the disposal of 26 and 20 Southdown stud ewes, was concluded.

The morning’s offerings opened with English Leicesters, but of the seven pens only two were sold at 1 l-4gns., the remainder being passed. Three pens of 2-shear Border Leicesters were disposed of also at 1 l-4gns.

Ryelands attracted attention and averaged about Signs., which was the best price paid last year. Top price was secured by Williams and Kettle, Ltd., on account of M. S. Chambers, of Havelock North, who disposed of 14 shearlings to B. L. Chambers, of Wairoa, at 5 1-4 gns. apiece.

The entry of 2 700 Southdowns met with a very cautious response at the

start, the first 100 sheep being sold at an average of to 2gns. The market then brightened a little. The tendency was to buy individual pens, and very few buyers were found to take a line of pens. For the most part the vendors disposed of their offerings, few pens being passed of first 500 sheep offered; A iine of 22. bred by W. J. Giblett, of Ngatarawa, was sold by Williams and Kettle to various buyers at an average of a fraction over sgns. apiece, the first pen of the line going at 6gns.. which was rhe best price before mid-day. The top price of the day was paid by Stratford Bros., of Hastings. for a pen of 5 shearlings sold a t s i-4gns. by the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.. Ltd., acting on behalf of Win. Rayner. The Cliffs, Masterion. This figure equalled the highui-t price of last year. The morning session's offerings we!, disposed of at an average oi from 3 A to 4gns., and less than 10 per cent, of the offerings were passed i u. • Li the afternoon, however, there was a slump, and the best price was '<gns. for another pen of five shearlines bred by *Wm. Rayner, of “The Cliffs.” As is usual, the late afternoon saw the small buyers in action, and though passings showed an increase on the morning’s activities, a considerable number of pens went under the hammer at about 2gns. The average for the day would work out at from 23 to 2 l-4gns.. with a total passings at about 15 per cent. Buyers were not very active in the Romney section of the stud sheep, and quite a number of entries were passed at the hammer owing to insufficient bids. The average price realised by vendors was in the vicinity of 14gns. Top price was obtained for a splendid Romney shearjug ram. offered on account of Sir William "Perry, of Penrose. Masterton, this sheep realising 24gns. AX ith the Southdown stud rams bidding was considerably brisker, and buyers paid fair prices for some excellent rams. The average return lo sellers was slightly above IGgns. The top price in this section 3agns.. realised on a Southdown ram entered by Ellis Bros., of Bulls. The offering of Southdown stud ewes was withdrawn for private sale. Prices included: — SOUTHDOWNS On account R. M. Perry, Alasterlon —g 1-siiear, J. Blundell (Argyle), 4 3 gns. On account C. J.
