Reed hopes to be able to resume riding when the Melbourne autumn meetings begin in the middle of next month. GONE SORE Tavern Knight has been spelled. This colt developed soreness prior to the Great Northern Foal Stakes, in which he was one of the early fancies. He took his place in one event at the meeting, but did not go well and finished well back. He was allotted only light tasks after the meeting, but when speeded up in preparation for the Takapuna meeting, again showed signs of soreness. Tavern Knight’si spell may not be of long duration, but he will not be brought in again until he is free from the trouble. SHOULD GO HIGHER Kamal Pasha, who won the Melrose Handicap, at Wellington, easily, is one of the only two three-year-old offspring of the Gay Crusader horse Gay Shield racing in the country, the others being two-year-olds, among whom there have already been four

winners. He is a bay gelding from the King Rufus mare La Penna, a member of the successful family that produced Bronze, one of the best racing mares in New Zealand in her time, also Rational, Lady Desmond, The Monk, Veilmond, etc. He was bred in Australia, and, offered at the Trentham sales two years ago, he was purchased for 125 gns. by his present owner, Mr. M. Lettof, of Dunedin. He has contested only seven races to date, and this was his first win. All the indications point to his making good.
