PRIME CATTLE FIRMER A RISE IN FAT SHEEP The yarding of beef at Stortford Lodge sale yesterday was a representative offering of 368 cattle, but smaller than the previous two sales. Included in the entry were some extra prime pens of heavy bullocks. An outstanding draft of HcrefordShorthorn bullocks was sold on account of Tc Apiti Station, ranging in price from £7 5s to £7 15s. It can safely be stated that these bullocks will weigh over four figures. These wore the best big lot of heavy bullocks offered for some time, being deep, square-bodied beasts in prime condition. Bidding for them was animated, and the prices realised were the highest average secured by any seller this season. Four pens of medium weight P.A. bullocks were sold on account of the estate of A. S. G. Carlyon from their Koparakcrc property, realising from £5 10s to £6 Is. Four pens of light weight Hereford bullocks, sold on account of Mr R. Yule, realised up to £5 12/6. Three pens of prime P.A. cows and heifer" disposed of on account of Mr T. May, Ocean Beach, sold up to £4 13s. Bullocks from the same breeder ranged up to £6 11/-. A largo draf t of Hereford dehorned bullocks, sold on account of Messrs Peacock Bros., Kairakau, ranged in price up to £6. Several pons of good quality P.A. bullocks, sold on account of Mr A. A. Small, realised up to £6. An extra prime Hereford heifer, offered on account of Tauroa’Station, realised £5 10s. The balance of the draft, sold on occount of this station were all prime cattle and realised full market rates, the heifers ranging from £4 4/- to £5 4/- and cows from £3 15/to £4 11/-. A draft of two prime Shorthorn bullocks from Mr D. J. Holden’s Mangatcretero property reached £7 2/6. Two pens of Shorthorn-Hereford cross bullocks went at £6 and £6 11/-. Two other pens of similar beasts, but not so bulky, sold at £5 10s to £6 2s. Other good lines of bullock beef sold well up to late rates. An export buyer operating cx.'cn-. sively for ox beef stiffened up the market in this section, and a buyer from Afanawatu was responsible for increased prices being paid for fat cows and heifers. Tn addition to the Tauroa draft there were several other good lines of cow beef, there being rather a scanty supply of heifers. A draft of light prime P.A. cows on account of T. May, reached £4 12s. Other similar lots went at prices ranging from £4 4s to £4 Ils. Three nice Hereford heifers sold at £4. others going at £3 15s. A single prime Hereford bullock brought £6 Ss; two S.H.-Hereford cross bullocks bringing £6 ss. A nicely finished line of twenty P.A. and P.A. cross bullocks -went from £5 6s. Vealers came forward in large numbers than usual, and there was a wide difference in some of the prices. The first two offered brought £2 19s and £2 7s fid, but later animals ranged from Ills to £2. Three S.H. vealer steers went well within their value at 30s. Altogether the bullock market showed a much firmer tone than it has done for some time. Extra prime light weight ox beef realised up to 16s per lOOlbs., heavy weights selling at a lower range of 2s per hundred. Prime heifer realised up to 14s per lOOlbs., and cow at 13s. FAT CATTLE Bullocks. —Extra prime heavy £7 2s fid to £7 15s; prime heavy £6 to £6 12s fid; prime light £5 to £5 18s fid; unfinished £3 15s to £4 15s. Cows.-—Primo heavy £4 to £4 18s; prime light £3 Is to £3 16s; unfinished £2 2s fid to £2 Ils. Heifers. —Extra prime heavy £5 4s to £5 10s; prime heavy £4 Is to £4 10s; prime light £3 10s to £3 17s. Dairy Sorts. —Prime heifers £3 ss; prime cows £2; unfinished £1 ss. Vealers.—Heavy, £2 7s 6d to £2 19s; medium £1 7s fid to £1 15s; light 13f to 15s. STORE CATTLE There was only a small yarding in this section, the main entry being a line of 35 P.A. cross bullocks, which were passed at £4 7s fid, seven 34-ycar Shorthorn steers sold at £2 IBs fid and 4 yearling Shorthorn steers at 20s. Some of the store cows were practically a drug on the market, and one Jersey cow looked very dejected as she passed out of the ring after having been sold for ss. DAIRY CATTLE There was an entry of forty cows

and heifers in this section. FAT SHEEP The offering of sheep in the fat section totalled only 500. The smaller entry was responsible* for a sharp rise in price, xor there was no advance in quality in most lines. Top price fur ewes, however, was 10s lOd for two lots of prime fat ewes. Two pens of prime wethers, offered on. account of Air Paul Ashby, Maraekakaho, realised 13s lid, and a pen of smaller sheep on account of the same vendor, sold at 13s fid. Four pens of heavy wethers, on account of Ohiti. Station sold at 14s. Two pens from Opoho Station brought the. same price, while two other pens brought 13s fid and 1.3 s lid respectively. One line of 133 fat 2-tooth wethers from Air A. A. Small were good buying at 13s. Three pens of prime ewes, on account of Air A. Land, Tc Aute, sold at 10s 2d. Medium woolly fat hoggets sold at 10s 2d, and a prime pen of b.f. at 13s 2d. Alodium-weight butchers’ ewes advanced Is Cd per head in value. Four fat hoggets went at 14s 3d, and one at 15s 6d. Prices ranged as follow: — Prime fat ewes 9s 9d to 10s lOd, fat ewes 7s 7d to 9s Id; Prime fat wethers 12s to 14s; fat hoggets, 7s fid to 10s 2d; prime fat hogets 10s lid to 15s fid. STORE SHEEP The entry of store sheep was a record small one, only a few pons being yarded. Forty ewes with lambs brought 13s. Eleven ewes with 15 lambs brought 12s Id; 11 ewes in lamb to S.D. rams (two lambs being born in the pen) Bs. Fat and forward hoggets ranged from 6s 9d to 9s 2d. Store ewes brought 2s fid to 4s.

ADDINGTON MARKET FAT SHEEP PRICES A DALANCE (Per Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Entries generally were smaller in the major sections at the Addington market to-day. A feature of the market wore sharp advances in fat sheep values as a result of the shortest entry for many months. Fat cattlo were easier. Fat pig values reached the highest level for over 12 months. Store Sheep.—There was a fair sized entry, mostly ewes, a shabby collection, which met a steady demand at firm but unchanged values. Values were: Good s.m. threc-quarterbrcd ewes 11/6 to 12/6, ordinary 8/6 to 9/6, ordinary s. and f.m. halfbred 7/- to 8/6; good ewe hoggets to 12/6, cull wether hoggets to 4/6; ordinary halfbred wethers to 8s Id. Spring lambs brought from 27/4 to 29/4. Sheep. —The entry of 2700 was the smallest of the year. The short supply forced the basis of values up to 3/- a head above late rates. Values were: Extra prime heavy wethers to 21/10, prime heavy 16/6 to 18/6. prime medium weight 15/- to 16/-, ordinary 13/- t 0 14/6, light 10/6 to 12/6; extra prime heavy ewes to 16/1, prime heavy 13/6 to 15/-, prime medium weight 11/6 to 13/-, medium 9/6 to 11/-, light 7/6 to 9/-. Fat Cattle. —There was an entry of 410 head, with about 150 from the North Island, 80 from the West Coast and 50 from Otago and Southland included in the total. It was a disappointing market, with the basis of values generally easier at a fall per head of from 10/- to 20/-. Outside cattle were included in the passings. Bost beef made up to 22/- for 1001bs., good 16/6 to 20/-, heavy 16/- to 18/-, secondary 12s to 16/-, and inferior and rough down to 9/-. Values were: Extra prime heavy steers to £ll 2/6, prime heavy £7 5/- to £9 10/-; prime medium weight £6 to £7 15/-, medium quality £3 10/- to £5 10/-, light to £3 10/-; extra prime heifers to £8 12/6, prime £5 10/- to £7 10/-, medium £4 to £5 10/-, light to £3 10/-; extra, prime cows to £7 17/6, prime £4 15/- to £6 10/-, medium £3 to £4 5/-, light to £2 17/6. There was a small entry of fat pigs, with a generally improved demand and prices advanced. Values were: Choppers 50/- to £6 16/-, baconers 50/- to 57/6, heavy £3 to £3 5/6, extra heavy to £4 1/6; average price pel’ lb 54d to 6 l-4d. Porkers made 27/6 to 35/- and heavy 38/6 to 47/6; average price per lb. 6 l-4d.
