CASTLE SEIZED

The Daily Mail’s Roscommon correspondent says that Donamon Castle and grounds are to be used as the Irish Republican Army’s training camp, according to the leader of the raiders who refused a further statement as to the purpose of the seizure. There are no sentries on duty, but the castle approach is closely watched from upper windows and strangers are warned off. The raiders arrived in lorries and cars and apparently travelled a considerable distance. Nobody knows how they are rationed as local storekeepers are receiving no orders for supplies. The Adjutant-General of the Irish Republican Army, in a statement, says the “facts” in connection with Donamon are that a party of volunteers unarmed, assembled for the purpose of camping for a short period. The castle was not occupied by force as it had been unoccupied ofr many years. He adds that the Irish Republican Army is not a secret organisation. This conflicts with Press reports. The leader told a reporter to get out or be put out. r The Owner’s Complaisance The owner of the castle is living In Hampshire. He says he has no intention of returning. He took the furniture away and he is not surprised at the seizure and would not be surprised at anything. His agent was shot dead outside the castle. He tried to discover the murderer but the tenants said they knew nothing.
