Euchre Party. A very successful euchre party was held in the Ruahino Tearoom last ing in aid of St. Joseph’s Church. The winners were: Mrs Urquhart 1, Mrs Hutchinson 2; Mr M. Murphy 1, Mr Brown 2. The consolation prizes were awarded to Miss Oakley and Mr McLeavy. Minor Collision A minor accident occurred this afternoon at the corner of Russell and Herbert streets, a touring car coming from Napier, and a van, owned by the H.B. Farmers’ Co-op. Association, meet ing in collision. Fortunately no one was injured and neither vehicle was badly damaged. Alleged Assault Case. . 1 An echo of the regrettable incident'that occurred at the combined hockey and military ball, held at the Municipal Theatre in March last, when Captain Cowie was injured, will be heard in the Waipukurau Court on the 7th. of June, when a local young man Will appear on a charge of alleged assault. Ormondville Court Closed. The Police Court at Ormondville, which has been in existence for a large number of years has recently been closed, and the records have been removed to Dannevirke. The boundary of the X Waipawm police district extends to half-way from here to Dannevirke and cases arising in this area will be held at either the Waipukurau or Waipawa Courts. Increased Hospital Levy. “The hospital levy for this year has jumped from £2400 to nearly £5000,” stated the Mayor of Hastings (Mr G. F. Roach) at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening, when he asked that a committee be appointed to confer with Mr J. S. Barton, Commissioner at Napier, regarding the increased levy being made by the Hawke’A/ Bay Hospital Board. “I thought that with the Government taking over relief matters there might be certain points requiring consideration,” he added. A committee comprising the Mayor, Crs. R. Henderson and P. Loach was appointed to meet Mr Barton next Monday afternoon. Power Board Charges During the course of the debate at the Central Hawke’s Bay Electric Power Board meeting this morning on the chairman’s annual report, Mr A. C. Holms showed that as against the Dominion average of 46.66 per cent of power board working expenses to rcv-V enue received, the Central H.B. Board could claim the very satisfactory ratio, despite its special, hardships of being a sparsely populated area, of 47.02 per cent. In reply to a suggestion made by the chairman that in urging certain reductions (in the basic lighting rate of 9d) by at least a small amount, -Id per unit, Mr Holms said he was not concerned for the possibility of causing a rate to be levied on the country ratepayers. Such a suggestion he objected to as an unwarranted one. The large showroom of Messrs John j Winlove and Sons, the greater part of which was formerly used for accommodating stores, has recently been rearranged, a varied 'assortment of kitchen, gardening and general household utensils, brushware and cutlery being very advantageously displayed on three large tables, somewhat on the lines adopted by Woolworths’.
